Ok. So I am starting a new thread related to glass.

Here is a first go. I used spray paint and ran the machine at 400mm/min

I think it turned out well (50x28mm in size), but getting the paint off is a pain in the butt.

At least it is a proof of concept for my machine and am happy with it.

When I was using paint I would use acetone to clean the paint off.

I have a whole new jar of that.... comes in handy for 3d printing

Of course I did everything wrong. I spray painted it with high heat black spray paint and started taking it off with turpentine with a paper towel.

Yeah, not the best way to clean it off, but I used what I had for the test.

I have a real piece of glass to perform a real test.

Wow, that is impressive. Did it dig in and can you feel the engraved part. Since cutting some horrid masking tape, I have to ask, did engraving on paint not smell too bad?
I am making plans for a rotary tool so this will come in useful. I plan to engrave people's names on cheap wine glasses for a party...for bonus points with the S.O.!

Yes, it is the Jeep logo. It is what was on my screen for a test and quick.

I did not notice much of a smell, but had my box over the machine and did not turn the exhaust fan on. I was out there building something else (so within 5-10 feet of the machine) and did not smell any burning. Being that I am burning paint, I do not recommend it to be done inside though.

I can feel the engraving faintly. It did not dig in deeply, but I was using a piece of cheap $1 store picture frame class (very thin). I have an 8x10" piece I bought from Home Depot that I am just itching to etch. If it turns out well, I want to etch something I want to keep, so the design process is in full swing.

So I have been testing a bit more with various methods

Black construction paper- burned the paper and left smudges on the glass. No marks though

White paper - same thing

Kids paint - very small marking in the glass. Have to hold at an angle to see it

Black nail polish - hard to apply but works well

Black spray paint - works well. WAS HARD TO REMOVE

I found something that puts acetone, nail polish remover or turpentine to shame. It's called Goof Off. It is a super glue remover. I put it on high temp black spray paint and take a paper towel to remove and it comes off with a light swipe. SUPER EASY!!!!   Now time for a test on real glass

So, here are a few more tests on glass that I did. Right out of the gate, I can tell the pictures could have used a bit of editing before I engraved, but these were just something I pulled off the internet and did not edit.

If you look close, there are a few wavy lines on the sides. I did rebuild my machine. I checked the belts, greased the wheels etc...

Do you think the belt on the X is too tight? Could my wheels be too tight on the gantry? Are the screws too tight?

Whenever I take apart my X axis, I have to do the "tie wrap" method to keep the wobble out.

Any suggestions or comments is appreciated.

Re your wabble, could it be that one of your wheels is not circular? I would also make sure there is no play in the structure especially where the plastics meets the extruded aluminum... After a bit of use mine needed tightening.

Good luck bud. You may have to play with the speed based on the thickness of the glass.
