I did mine afterwards and did not care for the result. Will try one your way.

Wow hadn't tried that. It's funny how small variations in the processes can affect results. I am definitely going to try sealing before

Looks very nice. But out of curiosity did it actually etch the slate or is it only removing the sealer ?

He etched the slate. That is what slate looks like when you hit it with a diode. He burned though the coating and etched the stone. I usually go at like 1500mm/min. He had to go slower to burn off the sealer.

Ok - I tried another test today:

1. Sealed the slate
2. Etched at 1500 feed rate

Result - the same good quality engraving. It appears that the secret is to use sealer first. I used Tasman Premium Slate seal = see https://www.tasmanchemicals.com.au/slate.html

Regards
Jim

Finally tried a slate etching after applying a coat of TENAX Ager stone sealer. The result is a significant enhancement in image contrast compared  to an untreated stone. Not saying that I like it, but it is different. This is also my first use of a 1.6W laser on slate.

NOTE: TENAX Ager is probably the most toxic stuff I have ever used.  Definitely getting a locked box in the garage.

In the attached photos the thin lines are 0.4mm and the fat are 0.8mm. Pretty good resolution for slate.

Speed    200mm/min   burn
              1500mm/min traverse
Power    255

I tried another idea recently that I think is a nice effect.

1. Seal blank slate coasters
2. Engrave
3. Add water based coloured acrylic paint over the entire surface and leave for a couple of minutes - this soaks into the engraved areas only
4. Wipe off paint
5.Optional - coat with more sealer

Sounds like a great idea. Will try on next image. Any thoughts on paints that might look like natural rock??

Any body else notice if you try to etch the grey color slate coasters from Michaels, they come out a browning color and actually have a bad smell when etching?
Not sure what my laser is as it was inherited

I'v etched about 200 coasters from Michaels and never had any odor or brownish color. You must have the odor generating laser module from www.stinky.com.

Ok I tried this and failed.  I just saw why!!! I didnt seal them first.  Just eched then put on paint then tried to wipe off.... I thought that seemed wrong and the result was the paint was impossible to remove.  Read all the directions lol.  Seal, engrave, paint, wipe, seal.

It is only on the lighter colored grey slate coasters. The darker black ones engrave with no issues or smells
