The laser is not the problem, or the software but it may be the material.

Not all material will produce good results, it may be reflecting the lower energy and then only burning at high power. Sometimes sanding the surface will help as it reduces the reflections.

Ok, great! I didn't figure it was the software (other than I have the settings wrong) but I am glad to hear that it is not the laser as well. So far, I have been trying random scraps of wood (cut offs from yellow pine slats I believe) I will try something different and see if that helps. Thank you for your assistance!

Love this thread. Lol. I just got my A3 put together. It arrived at lunch and it has already burnt a little... Just need to figure out settings for the greyscale..  will try sanding my materials first and leaving the dust on...
Not sure what my laser is as it was inherited

I remove the dust and seal the wood with Danish and or polyurethane before burning. I think it keeps the char from settling into the wood grain. Also use a low power air while burning and a high power one after to get rid of the char. These steps were posted on this site by users obtaining better results than I. If you encounter better procedures please post.

I give up. What is it? Perhaps you could post the design image file for comparison.

If you have a Mana board or clone I would suggest the EleksMaker laser, they support TTL and are plug-n-play with their board.
