Here is the file. Looks like $30 is set to 255.

Guys, I have no idea, but there laser sure appears to be MUCH brighter at 1000 then 255.
As far as I know, everything SHOULD be default settings. (I've never played with these)

The output should be CW at 255 meaning maximum power, increasing to 1000 would sill be a CW output so there should be no change in intensity. The only exception is if something is malfunctioning, you would need an oscilloscope to verify (an RMS volt meter may work in a pinch).

Here's a quick experiment: Set the manual laser power to 255 and fire a pulse for say 50ms on a piece of card, then move the card over slightly and do the same at 1000 power. Check the diameter of the 2 holes as well as the burning around them, if they look identical then the power is maximum at 255.

Okay, I tried your experiment, and your right, there was not difference in spot intensity.
SO, I'm not sure whats going on... but the more I play, the happier I am with it.
Although the spot clarity still bugs me, it's working ... okay ...

Did I just get unlucky with the spot clarity? I would really like to have a better defined spot.
So I think my options are either a new lens, or new laser?
- If I get anew laser, I'd like something a little more powerful.
- Looking to get through 1/8" ply would be great.
- I have Zax's T2 Laser software. (any way to change the steps per mm? considering putting on 16 tooth in lue of the 20 tooth gears)
- Is there not an option to change out the lens to change the focal distance? and hence the size of the spot? (pros/cons?)

Your subject looks to be quite a distance from the lens. Try bringing the subject higher and refocus as you may not be at the optimum distance relative to the laser emitter; I have found this can make a big difference to spot density and shape.

Out of interest what are you using to blow down your air assist tube?

Okay, I can try that (raising the work closer to the laser and refocus)

As for the air assist, its a EcoPlus 793 GPH Air Pump.
Seems to work well.

P.S. might have the laser sold this afternoon.
