Title: Broken stepper motor wire
Post by: nottingham82 on December 22, 2016, 01:11:10 AM
I had a problem but I solved it.  just thought id post for others.

My Y axis motors werent moving smooth.  I couldnt see why.  I checked everything was tight but not too tight, but it was still rough.  I disconnected the motors to check the connections and noticed my white wire on the +x side was broken.  A little solder and it was back to its old self.  Dont know how i broke just the one wire but I'm glad I found it quickly.

If the connecting wire with plugs and sockets connected  came with the laser from China then beware..their soldering technique is abysmall
- you can find dry joints that easily break especially with the  unit connected to the cable is  constantly in motion....

(A tip I learned about the Chinese  Quality Control was on an RC transmitter for model aircraft..)
On taking delivery...open the back..tip upside down and shake.   The result was tiny  blobs of solder and very small bits of wire dropping out!!

I think "abysmall" is being too kind.

Oddly it broke mid wire! Not in the middle.  It was near the connector just not at any joints it was a half inch back down the wire.

Sounds like a fatigue break  usually   this sort of break occurs with  single wire core cable  not multi stranded.  Strange occurrence tho.....

it was a multi strand when i stripped it.  very fine though.  Probably why it was so fragile.

broke again at the solder point.  Im gonna flip the wire around so the solder point is at the board.  Forgot I took the wire off and ran a burn with 1 y stepper motor.  actually worked alright.

ok that didnt work.  the wires are unidirctional since there is a diffrenct connection on each end.  guess I just keep soldering every month or so.

It's very possible to blow the driver if the wire fails under load, so unfortunately it's time to replace it.

dont you put that voodoo on me!

you know what will happen....

Ill start to order 1 stepper motor wire and Ill end up with every part I ever wanted and forget to order the stepper motor wire.

You can never have enough spares  ;D
