General Discussion / Getting better at 3D printing

Just messing around

Just thought I'd drop my eBay auction for a mint conditions MatterControl T10. I know a lot of us laser-guys are also into 3D printing.

Trouble Shooting / 50 Watt Chinese laser
« on: June 06, 2016, 11:46:14 AM »
I know Zax has experience with the cheap CO2 lasers.

My brother just bought one and we're trying to cut the planetary card as a benchmark piece. Acrylic works beautifully, but with 3mm laser ply, we get a very gummy scorch. I've attached a couple of pics. We did this one at:

50W laser
5 mm/sec feedrate
80% power

We get a full cut in a single pass.

As like most of these machines, it has an air pump  to quell flare-ups and it also exhausts smoke/fumes to a hose that is terminates out-of-doors.

Any advice to reduce this scorching will be very much appreciated.

T2 Engraving / Feature Requests
« on: May 17, 2016, 07:14:59 PM »
1) multiple passes (vector only); allow custom user-entered number, sometimes we want more than the drop down allows.

2) raster image positioning; ability to move image to origin, far maximum, etc.

3) save-able settings profiles; for feedrate, laser power, engraving area, etc.

Thanks!

Tomorrow, a 28" vinyl cutter will arrive. It's an MH series unit from USCutter.

If anyone has experience with these, I'm gladly taking advice.

Other Software / Utility: convert image formats
« on: May 05, 2016, 01:03:17 PM »
I'm currently using realConverter to convert my EPS collection to DXF for use in T2 Laser.

https://www.reaconverter.com/convert/eps_to_dxf.html

There's a 14 day trial version; it limits batch conversion tasks to five files at a time. I will likely upgrade since I have ~175,000 EPS images to convert.

Trouble Shooting / Strange Behavior in T2 Laser
« on: April 23, 2016, 06:12:21 PM »
T2 has been working very well, until I tried to do a dithered engraving on a pine board today.

The output is defined at about 130mm x 170mm.

I first started engraving in a really narrow area, pausing for a second or two on the left and right edges of the X axis. Then it started to engraving in a wider area, with less burning at the edges (i.e. it stopped pausing at the ends).

I've attach a pic of the output after it started to go wider. I've also attached the generate gcode. You can see the first part of the job where it was pausing by the upper left burned areas.

Any idea why this may have happen? I uploaded the packaged default GRBL settings into the machine just before setting up the image and generating Gcode.

General Discussion / How did you find this forum?
« on: April 22, 2016, 06:19:09 PM »
I'm curious how our current members came to find this forum. I found it after a lot of Googling.

I think we should post the URL on the various vendor sites that sell these DIY laser kits. It's win-win for us (to get more brains involved) and for them (to learn what we have here).

This will also give Zax and Ralph more exposure to help in the selling of their software, which is also beneficial to new laser owners.

In that vein, Gearbest has an affiliate program that could be used to help Admin earn some $$ to pay for the site costs. In other words, banner ads. I'm sure some of the other vendors have similar opportunities. Speaking for myself - I have no problem with some banner ads on these pages if it helps defray costs.

Just some thoughts I had. I love this group/forum and would like to see it continue to grow and evolve.

p.s. Don't forget to post up how you originally found this place.

THX!
