3D Printer Software / 3D Printer Slicers
« on: January 02, 2018, 05:30:30 PM »
I have been using Cura 2.3.1 for some time now and love it. I tried Cura 3 but it did not work on over half of my computers.

There are some options in Slic3r that I want that are not in Cura. So, I have downloaded Slic3r Prusa Version and have transferred my known good settings over.

I have a Maker Select v2 and if anyone has any pointers for a new Slic3r user, feel free to chime in.

Projects / My CoreXY Adventure
« on: November 09, 2017, 08:33:12 PM »
As most of you know (and are probably already sick of  :P), I have an A5 clone machine that I started this whole laser addiction with. After many attempts to repair the dang machine, I gave up an bought myself an A3 Pro. Now I have this A5 machine with the old white POM wheels that don't work just sitting in my garage begging for something to do. Instead of buying those pieces of crap or having to make new plates to handle the OpenBuilds V wheels, I embarked upon an adventure. An adventure to convert my A5 machine into a CoreXY system.

Why?  .......................BECAUSE I CAN!!!!!  ;D

So far, I am still in the design phase. That is an adventure in an of itself. After many setbacks in Fusion 360 (remember to backup your files to your hardrive!!!!), I am getting closer to what I think will be a functional machine. Only time will tell though.

Now, that being said, I know the A5 size is very limiting. If I were to use this as a laser engraver, pen plotter or even a 3D printer, I know the size limitation does not justify the amount of work that I have put into this project. In response to that, I have these things to say:

1. This is a proof of concept using the material I have available
2. For the most part, the components I have designed are modular and could be installed on a larger machine.
3. This is a great way to learn more about Fusion360 and just plain old 3D design
4. Because a man need a hobby  ;)

Please don't judge just yet. I have much to do yet to make this printable. Suggestions or comments are always welcome though.

General Discussion / Printer enclosure
« on: October 20, 2017, 10:39:04 PM »
Has anyone made an enclosure for their 3D printer? I know many of you are in the Southern Hemisphere where 60F is sweatshirt weather (still wearing shorts at that time up here).

I am building a IKEA Lack enclosure so I can have my printer in my house and am wondering if there is anything I should add to it

General Discussion / Printer skipping lines
« on: October 14, 2017, 08:35:31 PM »
Hey all,

I designed a box enclosure for a project I am making. The piece is 160mm x 100mm. When the first layer is going down, I notice it "skips" some lines when doing its diagonal runs (about 2-3 lines) and leaves that gap. At first I thought maybe it wasn't feeding filament through at that time, but it just skips them. It does that for each layer for the initial layers.

Now, I never see this on smaller faces. As you can see in the pictures, it does it sometimes on the top layers as well, but again that is hit and miss.

It seems like whenever there is no retraction for a while, it does that.

I am going to run my files through netfab to see if there is something I am missing, but if any of you have a suggestion, I am all ears

Laser Accessories / White POM Bearing

Can anyone tell me what bearing is used in the white POM wheels?

T2 Engraving / Fritzing
« on: October 04, 2017, 08:08:22 PM »
I have to ask, and am pretty sure it has already been asked, but can we use Fritzing to export a compatible file for T2? If so, how?

General Discussion / Flexible Bed Plate
« on: October 03, 2017, 07:12:58 PM »
Was playing around with a glass bed today because my PEI sheet needs replacing (dang scraper took a nice chunk out) and found this in my web meanderings
Might have to buy it just to try it out.

General Discussion / Could an A3 machine become a 3D Printer?
« on: September 29, 2017, 08:19:27 AM »
Hey all,

I am tossing around the idea of building my own 3D printer. I would like something that is larger. I want something at least 12"x12" in work space (not sure how much I want in Z height). I have a few project I have been working on that exceed my 8x8x8 build space on my Maker Select and have been having to cut up the pieces and glue them together.

I was looking at the hypercube on thingiverse

Then I thought, crap, an A3 machine would be the perfect size!!! I would think all you would need to do is the following:
1. add some Z height
2. Add a bed and Z axis
3. get a RAMPS or Mmelzi board for controller
4. replace the laser with an extruder

Does anyone see any issues with how the x and y axis are driven on an A3 for use for a 3D printer? I know the belts are not closed loop, but a printer would not need to go nearly as fast as the lasers can.

Opinions welcome

General Discussion / Maker Select V2 Hot End
« on: September 18, 2017, 01:24:14 PM »
I have the stock extruder and hot end on my Monoprice Maker Select v2 with the PTFE tube. My questions are:
-Will this work with PTEG?
-Do I need a all metal hot end?
-Should I consider an all metal hot end anyway?
-If yes, Microswiss or E3D? (Personally, I would lean towards microswiss as it is a drop in replacement)

Kits / Laser Engraver Spacers
« on: September 10, 2017, 08:17:31 PM »

Just printed these for my A5. A little tight so you end up threading them on the M5s, but they seem like they will work better than the nylon spacers

General Discussion / Best filament for winter use
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:06:06 PM »
I have been searching the google machine and am having a hard time finding out what filament would be best for outdoor winter use.

I have made an auto-jigging ice rod holder. The first design was out of PVC tubing. I am in the process of revamping the design now that I have a 3D printer. I need a plastic that will hold up in a heated ice house and out on the ice.

I would think PLA would get too brittle and break. Any suggestions?

Projects / Laser Engraver Improvements
« on: August 24, 2017, 08:00:10 PM »
So I got sick of my Y axis motor cables getting stuck between the acrylic and frame and messing up some projects. Instead of getting mad, I got creative and made some cable chain.

I took the chain mounts and remixed them onto stonemull's nema mounts

I used these chain links

The end piece was made from the end bracket of the links and a 2020 connector that I found on Thingiverse

I am currently working on my x axis in my spare time.

3D Printer Software / Modeling Software
« on: August 11, 2017, 04:07:28 PM »
So, starting out with 3D printing, I decided to use tinkercad as it was easy, free and could be used anywhere.

I am starting to get to the point of wanting something more robust. I want to keep it free for now though.

My question is this: What is everybody using for their 3D modeling software?

Projects / My Rotary Axis
« on: August 06, 2017, 10:01:41 PM »
So, after trying the same rotary axis that Nottingham did, I found it to be overly complicated for my purposes. While the design is was very simple (4 rollers, 2 gears and 1 motor), I don't think the parts were designed well. Ah, the joys of Thingiverse

I am in the process of designing my own rotary axis. I am going for a direct drive chuck version.

This thread will show the joys and pitfalls I have during the process

I designed, printed and assembled the piece that will support the other end of the round object as you can see in the picture. I found out I have some calibration to do on my 3D printer as the holes for the bearings and screws were of the incorrect size. Also, the part that slides in had to be filed down a fair amount to get it to slide freely.

I designed it to have an adjustable height to accommodate various odd sized round objects such as wine glasses and bottles.

I have not released the stl files into the wild yet as I have yet to determine how much of the issues I had were my design or my printer. I am willing to share the files of anyone would like these, but remember there are known issues with the current setup.

I am in the process of designing the other end now. Hopefully I will have time this week to finish it and get it printed. Will post more as the updates come.

Laser Accessories / Rotary Axis Variations - Belt/Gear vs direct
« on: August 02, 2017, 07:47:13 AM »
I have seem a lot of different variations of a rotary axis (or 4th axis) on this site, youtube, google, instructables and thingiverse.

My question is this, for our laser engravers, does it really matter if the rotary is driven by a belt/gear or direct drive from the motor?

Can someone smarter than me explain why you would want to choose one over the other? I can see the idea with belt/gears for possible adding more torque or protecting the motor shaft from getting bent. I don't know if that matters with what I plan on doing. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel (well, maybe I am) but just want to understand WHY.
