Trouble Shooting / MonoPrice Selct Mini printer problem
« on: April 18, 2018, 03:31:00 PM »
I am experiencing a problem with my Monoprice select mini. It has worked like a charm since I bought it 6 months ago.

Today it started a job and went to the start point and stayed there and made a noise but didn't move.  I cancelled the print and homed the printhead and it finished up pushing down the metal plate and stayed in a depressed mode.

I tried to reprint a job, it wanted to print into the plate rather than on it.  I checked to ensure it was leveled.  Head kept below and I tried adjusting the leveling screws but no luck, the nozzle still wanted to bury itself into the plate.  I am unable to lower the front left screw enough to get any clearance.

I had had a few Static electricity jolts in the house due to low humidity and wondered it that may have effected the firmware, so updated the firmware to V41.110.2 just in case. No improvement.

If I had to guess what may be the problem it is that the "Z" lead screw may have skipped a bit thus being lower than it should be, is that possible?

Has anyone had a similar problem or have any suggestions for resolving this issue?

T2 Engraving / Is T2 likely to stop while multi-tasking
« on: March 27, 2018, 01:42:27 PM »
I had a project stop mid-way after an hour.  No apparent reason.  Was not able to restart,  so had to start all over.  Worked fine on a fresh start.

I was multitasking at the time, had several copies of Inkscape open.  Was doing some typing on another program (Evernote) when the stoppage happened.  Am I overloading my computer and T2?

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Pproblem with a stamp
« on: February 01, 2018, 01:43:04 PM »
I am having a problem with lasering a stamp.  The stamp is white rubber, which was problem #1, it did not burn but reflected the energy.  So, I added masking tape which helped, pass #1 burned the tape, pass #2 burned the rubber minimally as did passes 3 & 4, each leaving a darker residue.  I stopped after 4 passes at full power and speed of 1500 and resolution of 0.1.  When cleaned  up thepattern  burn was noticible but not deep enough, only 0.010", internet info indicates 0.035 -0.045" is a good depth for a stamp.

I do not think this rubber was the right type and have ordered some laser grade rubber.

My next problem is the somewhat ragged edge that is left.  I thought when I chose "sketch plus" an outline was done with a vector pass too which would make the outline smooth.  Have I done this wrong or misinterpreted it?

Any suggestions would help.

General Discussion / A forum feature that has gone missing
« on: November 22, 2017, 12:22:40 PM »
There was a feature at the top, above the menu line that enabled you to check a box so that only the messages were created since you last accessed the forum would appear.  It was most useful for keeping up-to-date.

Any idea where it went or how to find it?

I have not done any laser work for a few weeks, several versions back with T2.  Current version is V1.4z.

A) I am working on small detailed Christmas decorations and have done these before with great detail and smooth curves etc.

Today I am doing some repeats and find the outline created in T2 is very ragged, not smoothly curved as before.  This is seen on the screen when bringing  the png file in from Inkscape, when the drawing is genereated in "view" and when burned.  Have I missed a feature or adjustment that controls the smoothness of the outlined lines ?

I prepare my artwork in Inkscape and the lines are very smooth.

If needed I can do some screen shots.

B) In a related problem I find it difficult to find things in the manual, a search function would sure help.  Is this something that could be a new "feature"?

T2 Engraving / Laser inks for acrylic, glass, and aluminum
« on: August 16, 2017, 04:18:32 PM »
Has anyone had experience with laser inks( http://laser-inks.com/products.htm )?  These inks apparently work on glass, acrylic and aluminum.  They are applied by brush or air-brush and when dry the laser beam melts and fuses the "ink" to the substrate.  Excess ink is removed later by water or alcohol.

The info I have found so far indicated the 40 watt CO2 engravers work with these inks, but no info so far as to suitability with our smaller wattage lasers.

There are several other ink makers although this one seems  to be the one with a color palette.

I am interested in using these inks on acrylic and (suppplier Heves is in Argentina).

Info from anyone with experience, local sources (Canada or US), price , and safety would be apreciated.

T2 Engraving / Laser inks
« on: August 16, 2017, 10:12:50 AM »
Has anyone tried any "laser inks"?  These are painted onto metal or glass or plastic (I am interested in acrylics) and then the laser beam apparently melts and cures leaving the inked image behind.  Surplus non-acrtivated ink is washed off with water or alcohol.  These inks are available in variety of colors and the lasers they talk about using are the 40W CO2 type.  I wonder if our 2.5 watt lasers will work?

I have also seen metal paste colors (gold, silver and copper) that can be applied to an engraved item, the paste sticks to the engraved area and the excess will wipe off the smooth unengraved part.

T2 Engraving / Registration key gets "lost"
« on: August 11, 2017, 01:01:20 PM »
I am using T2 1.4q (registered version).

Every once in a while I start up T2 it says I am using the trial version and should register (or words to that effect) and shows me a screen box to add my registration key to.

I am registered, so I dig out my backup file and reload the key.  No big deal, just a nuicance, but you may want to know about it in case it is an easy fix.

T2 Engraving / Strange results
« on: June 17, 2017, 01:54:01 PM »
I made an engraving for a pen barrel (Blackwoood) using the sketch feature and using arial as wall as a stick font.

Engravings came out fine.  I wanted to redo doto deepen the engraving but could not re-burn.  Some of the features were greyed out and the laser would not move.  Finally by fiddling I was able to get it (the laser) to react and work.  This happened several times.  Stilll don't know why is stopped or restarted.

Second strange action was in redoing an engraving the text burned in mirror image and upside down.

Tried reboot but still had problem.  Then it cleared up.

Has anyone has similar odd behavior?

T2 Engraving / Source of slate
« on: June 10, 2017, 09:19:23 AM »
Was in local tile company and found some slate "tiles" sourced from India.  Very expensive, $0.13 each, yes, only13 cents each.

The tiles had a rough hand made form, several shades, and were ~5/16" thick (4" x 4" x 5/16").

The attached tile was lasered a full power, B&W setting, 0.1 resolution and speed of 900 using my 2.5 wat unit.
The subject is the Taj Mahal, from a line drawing off the web.  Finished with a spray coat of Varathane.

Perhaps your tile dealer may have some similar tiles.

T2 Engraving / T2 says not registered
« on: May 16, 2017, 10:02:40 AM »

Once and a while (maybe 3 or 4 times so far) T2 says I am using the trial version when I am registered.  Why does this happen?  This was ver 1.4g.

To resolve this I dig out my registration file, copy the license number into license field and I am OK until the next time.

T2 Engraving / T2 Profiles
« on: May 09, 2017, 02:03:51 PM »
I have been trying out Profiles in T2 Ver 1.4g.

Seems easy to do, but am I correct that if I add a new profile I lose the one I overwrote?

Are profiles limited to six profiles?

More would seem to be a better choice and have one profile for each different material/project combination that we use often.

T2 Engraving / "Cool down delay" between passes
« on: April 25, 2017, 04:34:33 PM »
There is a cool down delay option in the T2 settings sub menu.

How much burning (time or power level) would cause enough heating to require a cool down between passes (any formula for time vs power level)?

How long a cool down period is reccomended?

Will "air assist" make any difference by providing extra cooling to laser?

General Discussion / Hako smoke absorber
« on: April 23, 2017, 01:18:05 PM »
When I bought my A3 machine I also bought a Hako smoke absorber (uses activated carbon filters) to hopefully absorb some of the smoke without a more complex fan/exhaust system for use during the winter.

I was not very satisfied with the unit, it seemed under powered and barely moved the smoke through it.  The other day I happend to notice that it had a 220 volt motor despite a standard 110V plug.  No wonder it was slow and poor at removing the smoke.

I had an old 110V computer fan, so a simple swap did the job and now the smoke absorber works as expected and does a pretty good job.  I should point out that I only do small stuff 4"x4" or less so my smoke problem was not too large to begin with.  I will still need an exhaust system if I start heavy duty cutting.
