General Discussion / Re: Michaels Slate Warning

I am asking if it the lighter grey color that burns almost a brownish instead of white?

Trying to figure out if potentially that is the issue... maybe those lighter grey ones are a recycled slate they are passing off. They always seem to be in the middle of the pack where it is harder to see they are in there

The slate is kinda grey. I think i was going too slow and caused that.

seriously, i think they are using recycled slate and passing it off as original

Not talking about the grey color. If you look closely, you will see writing and a butterfly. That was under the area I was burning.

So, the new brand is ArtMinds. Be ware of that slate

I have some slate from before and it was by Darice Inc
https://www.darice.com/store/browse/catalog/wholesale-decor-home-slate

Might be a good place to look. I still need to make an account to get pricing. Thought I would share though.

Hey all,

I just bought some slate plaques to laser. I just lasered one and under the "dark coating" there were letters and a butterfly. Comparing an older plaque and this new one, they have switched suppliers. Seems like this stuff is being reused.

Not a good sign. I have two more plaques that i bought and will attempt to laser but I think we might have some issues.

There are steps like what was said that you need before you even attempt cutting.

On the material/tools side, you should get a raised bed so the vapors can escape at the underside.

Also set up an air assist to blow the spot away.

Both of these items have been talked in length on this forum

You will find ways and reason to build something once you get and get used to your machine. I got sick of losing my wallet and keys around the house, so I designed and printed this

Also take a look at Thingiverse. There a lot of laser cut items on there as well

T2 Engraving / Re: Laser turning on by itself.

That is “normal” with these boards. They are missing a pull down resistor on the laser pin to gnd.

You have two options
1. Keep the board powered down until you see the “connected “ message on T2

2. Add a pull down resistor

I do option one because option two never worked for me but many other have made it work. Just search for pull down resistor in the forum

The little tims are called AutoOut. They are not sold in the USA much anymore. Talk to a fire extinguisher company and see if they have any that they will sell you

octoprint has a laser grbl plugin, but you still need to generate the code and configure octoprint so it doesnt just dump the entire gcode file at once.
I played with it a bit but got bored.

Best bet, buy some cheap win tablets for the laser and have that be dedicated. Uses something like Box or dropbox to transfer your files from the computer you use to generate the gcode.

very nice an neat. Looks like you have your laser dialled in correctly.
Now expect to spend any remaining monay on slate, different woods and all sorts of other materials!
Lots of users here use inkscape to make vector designs.. Just saying as I find gimp a bit much. just my 2c!
