Thanks for posting. I have been experiencing similar random behavior on my unit. Today I noticed that the laser power transistor was conducting all the time. Not on full but enough to fire the laser. Will give the board a scrubbing and see if anything changes.

The way its been going, the drive motors will probably start operating in reverse and the laser will emit a sound wave that attracts skunks.

Looks like it is completely fried in the on state. About 1.5V.

It was taking about 16 passes at 50% power and 500mm/min feed rate.Now the laser in constant on and the wood is burning.

I just added a Z-Axis to my machine. In the process I switched from Eleks Maker L7 to L6 controller. The system is functioning but the L6 laser power appears to be weaker than the L7 as measured but the number of passes required to cut 2.3mm bass wood.

Is it just wishful thinking to get a users guide?

I suspect that the power transistor is hurting as the on voltage is not at 0.

I am very new in this arena and am currently only doing (attempting) cutting. Having good success with the grbl firmware from Sungeun K. Jeon & Simen Svale Skogsrud. It is public domain and builds either from ether the command line or Arduino environment. The companion GrblController application allows testing gcode commands and files.

My heat sink and fan mounting holes are spaced at 32mm.

For some unexplained reason the laser is working again. It is just on a workbench without any movement.

I have been wanting to try KiCad for quite some time and think this project will be a good starting point. How about I do the non-adjustable version. 25 years with gEDA tools have firmly set my design habits that are hard to break.

I also want to get a second laser diode module that will use the LED2001 module so going with what you have to start with is a good plan.

You mentioned that you have a BOM for the LED2001 board. I looked for parts today at Digikey. Can't find the inductor. Alternate part?

I have not isolated the fault. Symptom is the laser turns on weakly at low PWM (5 on L7, 60 on L6) and shuts off at any higher count. My cuts while it was working were not great and reading the various posts, many users are getting better results with the 2.5W unit. I don't think my laser has a good focus when it does work. 3mm wood burns and 3mm ABS melts.

I have been building a Z-Azis slide mechanism which is almost ready for testing, reverse engineering the L7 controller so I can debug with scope, and studying  the led2001 design. Somehow the laser project has eaten up all available time and I really don't have a use for the device.

If/when you do make a selection please post and I will get similar. Doing some price checks it seems that buying a complete kit is cheaper and you get some motors, controller, and aluminum stock.

I looked at my driver board under a magnifying glass and the part numbers on the IC's have been sanded off. Makes me want to reverse engineer and guess at the unknown parts.

Do you have a list of lasers you plan to use?

I just reread the spec. Looks like 2W is the max power dissipation at 60C. The 0.015 sense resistor would generate 6A. Is this ok?

I have a GearBest 5.5W unit that is not working very well. I am assuming that I fried either the laser or the laser power board. Have been following the TTL driver thread quite closely and plan on trying that route. Questions:

  1. What Voltage do the lasers typically require?
  2. Anyone know the specific designation for the GearBest 5.5W diode?
  3. Assuming I need to purchase a new laser module, recommendations for
     a 2.5W module that will work with the proposed TTL board?

Is this for testing without a laser? I'm assuming that with a laser attached RV1 would be set at 0 Ohm and the FB would be 99.99% driven by the output current.

I gathered that was the case. I don't understand the R4, R5 & D1 plus the RV1 at 1K is magnitudes of order greater than the sense resistor so I expect manual trimming would be quite difficult. I could be all wrong so please don't take this as an attack on your design plus I need one.
