HDF/MDF
« on: November 01, 2016, 08:34:16 AM »
Did anyone try to cut HDF/MDF (3-4mm) (regular one used for furniture)
How is it compared to (non-laser) plywood?
Does it really smoke so much as I can read on some websites?

P.S. thin HDF is usually used as a back-pane on furniture, bottom on some drawers, etc....

I have not tried it yet but I heard it was hard to cut because of the glue used to bind the particles together.

A lot of items for model railways  and dolls houses are cut in MDF but I suspect they are pro done with all the ventilation etc.,

Just found this.....
MDF is typically made up of 82% wood fibre, 9% urea-formaldehyde resin glue, 8% water and 1% paraffin wax.

.
Lasers are wonderful machines..not ONLY  can they cut a finger off BUT  they can also cauterise it at the same time.....

For HDF: " It differs from particle board in that the bonding of the wood fibers requires no additional materials,[3] although resin is often added. "

That's some interesting stuff. Due to its density It may be hard to cut with our little lasers.

Yep..I imagine the resin will foil a good cut...a 60 watter would be no problem tho!

Funny nobody tried.... I think I will. :) First need to arrange some ventilation.

Also I'm curious about cork sheets

That is the only sure way to find out :) I don't have any on hand or I would have given it a try myself.

Cork won't cut on my 40W CO2, but I haven't tried it with a diode laser... doubtful.

Sorry, I haven't tried thin MDF on the lasers but that's pretty much all I cut on the CNC. It does engrave very well.

I have been testing MDF 1.6mm and it takes way to lang. speed about 200  lazer at 100% and  15-20 passes and result is not optimal. some times through some times not. can't seem to find the optimal way.  :'( :'(

I never heard of MDF that thin,... What is your laser power?

Cork won't  cut on my 1600mw unit - catches fire no matter how fast I cut.

I did too and it works great. Hook it up and relate your experience with it.
