Cutting Craft foam 2mm to 4mm
« on: January 14, 2017, 05:13:51 PM »
I need to cut some gaskets out of adhesive craft foam that's 2mm thick, though I plan on doubling it up. The foam that I use is sold under the Foamies brand by Darice. I haven't been able to find an MSDS on it, but I believe it's made from polyurethane.

Will I be able to use an A5 2,500 mW laser to cut this? How wide is the cutting kerf? I need to cut holes that are spaced just 2mm apart.

I've had no luck in cutting foam like this...others have posted the same results...I bought my foam sheets from the Dollar Store.

I cut that all the time on my 2W, it works great. It's best to use 2-passes but you can cut it in one if you have a honeycomb table.

I think Ralph was thinking of the thick foam board and not "Foamies" although you can get a pack of assorted colors at the Dollar Store.

I use max power and feed rate of 80~120 (depending on the color) with 2-passes.

It does shrink as it cuts so getting precise sizes is a challenge, the kerf is wide like 1~2mm.
