T2Laser on XP
« on: February 26, 2017, 04:38:25 PM »
I've tried the trial version of T2Laser compiled for .NET 4 and the system works fine.
Will you continue to support XP in the future or was this a one-off?
Nice software.

Yes, I plan to continue supporting XP (.Net 4.0) for major versions only.

It's actually on my list to release an update soon, since there have been some significant updates.

I have to remove international support and a couple of minor features which require .Net 4.5.

I just tried the system again on an XP laptop with no luck.
I did have to install the 340 drivers as the New Hardware tool in XP had no luck finding a driver unlike Win 10 which had no problem.
When I tried to send to the laser from the laptop, the info window showed connected but I got a message about the initial string was incorrect.
But when I reconnected to the Win 10 system, the laser performed correctly.
Am I missing something or do I have an older release of the XP software?

The only reason I can think of that the message was corrupted is a communications issue.

Did you have the correct baud rate?

Are you sure the driver is correct for your USB chip?

v1.3f XP was the latest.

I have t2LaserXP V1.3.6.7
Not certain about the USB driver or the Baud rate as the Com display has disappeared from the System display. The laptop has a few other problems like 100% processor use because of some Microsoft update software that I have to defeat.

Strange that it does show connected even though the 'wrong first string' is sent.

"Connected" means the port is open
"Grbl Ready" means the laser is talking sense  :-\

Right click the big red button to disconnect or select disconnect from the Machine menu and those options will return.

I have successfully run the laser from BenCutLaser so I know GRBL 1.1e is OK and the laser is working as it should.
The baud rate is 115200 and the com port is 5 or 5 depending on which USB port I plug the laser into. The add-on driver set up the new COM ports and I used those values to get BenCutLaser working quite nicely.

I still get the error message after the connected and GRBL ready messages of "Input string was not in a correct format."

However, I would like to run an A-B test on these two products to decide which to use.

Any further suggestions?

Arrh! Sorry, I wasn't thinking.

The XP version isn't compatible with the new Grbl message strings, that's why you are getting the error. It is possible to switch Grbl 1.1 back to use the older format but that's not what I would recommend.

I will update the XP version - stay tuned!

I compiled and uploaded a new XP version at the original post:

http://benboxlaser.us/index.php/topic,859.msg10320.html#msg10320

It is v1.3y "Yemen", note this is untested as I don't have an XP system available.

That may be true, but I didn't test it. There's a non-XP version in the normal place as I didn't want you to feel left out  :P

Yay! Thank you for the feedback, especially since I couldn't test it.
