Engraving Project Management
« on: April 04, 2017, 06:43:29 PM »
Hey everybody. I am wondering how everybody records their projects. I usually try to doing an engraving, take a picture, write down the particulars (material, speed, power, res, size....), and throw in some thoughts of how I think it turned out. I tried this in a notebook, but wanted pictures to be with them. So, I started making folders. That way everything related to the project was in one space.

The reason I am asking what you all do is because my way feels very inefficient and messy. I was thinking of creating a database app that would keep the files together along with my notes. That way, I would have one UI for all of my projects instead of going through all of the folders. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel (too much).

What do you all think?

How about a hard bound paper Journal? Quick and easy to get to to read and write into. A DB seems like a little over kill maybe?

If you want something electronic, I also use Google Keep. It's free.

seriously though I post my settings here half for you guys and half for my failing memory.  If this site goes down I am lost.  So I see how a database would be beneficial.

Thanks for all the replies!
Nottingham, yeah, I would be lost without this forum as well. Sometimes the site is unreachable and I have to wait a few minutes. I get a panic attack every time that happens.

Ggallant, dude! I have been copying everybody here since I joined!

Ralph, so far the best recorder for projects is this site. I tried the good old fashioned notebook but I want pictures included. I will try google keep. Thanks for the suggestion.

Keep the suggestions flowing. I might start on a quick and dirty app to see if I can actually make this project. I will post my beta app when I get it done. If there is a demand for it, who knows? Maybe I can actually make a dime or five. Honestly, if I make an app worth paying for related to laser engraving, all proceeds would go to this forum. Without this forum, I would be lost and still be engraving Mario with Benbox.  :o

an app isnt a bad solution since presumably you will be adding the pictures on your phone anyway.  I have to convert them to post on this site but your phone already has them on there.  Just need a way to attach a few to a note to add settings and comments.

Agreed. Sorry, I misspoke. I am not at the level to do a mobile app. Plus, I do not want to code for android and ios. Yeah, I'm good, just not that good....yet

I plan to write a computer program (hopefully cross platform). My vision is to be able to have a settings location, original picture/file storage, gcode/finished file storage, notes area for your critique of your work and a spot to store your finished product picture. I would like all pictures to be shown as thumbnails. That way, you have one spot to go to to get all of your notes AND files. No more searching.

As for the pictures from the phone. All of my mobile devices have dropbox and google photos installed. Every day when I get home from work and connect to wifi, all of my photos upload to the cloud with easy access to them from any other device. Yes, it is one more step, but I like to backup my files in a few locations. I would like to have an export option as well within the application so all files could be a zip file that one could....say...upload to someone's favorite laser engraving forum (please let me know if you know of a good one  ;))

Thanks for listening to my ramblings. Sorry if it is scattered....welcome to my brain.

A computer is for computing.....and pictures....and video....and talking, texting, and gaming ...... running out of words for the day.
