Slate Baby!!!!!
« on: April 14, 2017, 08:10:44 PM »
Hey all. Nottingham has opened my eyes to the wide world of slate. Thanks Nottingham, you have now taken ALL of my time.

So here are a few things I have done for some friends. Funny story! I was walking into work and ran into one of my vendors. I had one of my coasters in my hand and she asked what it was. I showed her and explained what I did to make it. A day later, I get an email from her asking for a few coasters for one of her brands. BOO-YA!!! The coasters I made for her are not pictured (not my logo to share, I am going to see if I have permission to share my work of the logo though). A PAYING CUSTOMER!!!!!

Another funny story. I was at a car dealership today looking for a vehicle. I went to buy one and was talking to my salesman. She handed my wife a custom keychain with a monogrammed M for her name. They were hand crafted and she gives them out to customers. I thought, hey another craft person, so I showed her some pictures of what I did. Yup, she ordered 10 coasters to hand out to customers (I will let you decide which one of the pictures that may be  8)).

Yeah, and of course we have the American Flag. I blatantly stole that idea from Nottingham. I have a coworker who is a fire fighter and he saw what I was doing and asked for a set. I tried to get him to buy Nottingham's but he wanted me to do it. C'e la vie

So, the engraver is getting a LOT more use these days. After work, I am engraving. My wife is starting to give me some weird looks.......

I'm glad he ordered from you.  I prefer personal business rather than digital.  I'm always afraid they will break in the mail!  The jeep one is super cool as is the door sign!

All thanks to you bud!!! I am glad it is working. Thanks again!!!! That merca set might lead to another 5 sets when he brings them to his fire house  :D

I appreciate you testing with slate and bringing this option to the table. It is really taking off here.

The door sign was a coworker's daughter's name. He is sending it to her being that he has not seen her in years. He also ordered a 6x8" plaque for a niece's wedding gift. I may have taken some liberties with a certain coaster you made..... Sorry it was a short notice thing.

I am talking with a aunt-in-law about her son. He is still in high school and a certified volunteer fire fighter. He has been at this for many years. She gave my is school/unit patch and I am going to make a set for him (my treat of course). Can't wait.

Mike

Most of it is as follows;
Speed = 700
Resolution = 0.1
Horizontal

For the Jeep logo I did diagonal @ 800 speed at 0.1 res

One thing I have learned. MAKE SURE YOUR FEED SPEED IS LESS THAN 2000!
I have had some wavy lines on a few coasters and it was due to the "white space" feed speed set at 2000. My machine could not handle that and stop in time. I have it set to 1000 and so far it is working well. I have only tested with diagonal, but am running an American Flag to see if the waves go away with the feed speed of 1000. I will report back in about 10 min when it is done.

So, Just got done with another American Flag.
Settings;
Speed: 800
resolution: 0.1
Horizontal

I set the rapid feed rate to 100 and EVERY line is square. NO WAVES!!! reduce to 1000 from 2000 and you should be good.

OH YEAH!!!!!

I used to use 900 mm/min as my go to speed.  After some testing I found I like 1500 mm/min better.  It was whiter and brighter.  Now every machine is different and every piece of slate reacts slightly different.  You can actually get several hues out of slate if you do a variable speed.  You can go from a bright white to almost a baked golden color.  Agastar did some cool greyscale on his first try at slate.  I havent been brave enough to sacrifice any my precious slate for testing to dial in my greyscale settings.

He did the Vols coaster right? That was awesome. With my 2w machine, 700 seems to be about right for me

I have been using a feed rate of 3500 on printed circuit boards with vertical lines down to 0.1mm coming out okay. I did a bunch of tests and found it better above 2000 to be honest, no good for engraving though lol, just mentioning it.
Actually 1000 and 1500 give average results and 1200 is good, all steppers have a resonance, it is inherent in the design, they use a gooey lubricant to reduce the chances of oscillations, it acts like a damping factor in the math.
so there will be at lesst one speed that has very poor results and it can be worth changing by only around 10A% before discarding a speed as problematic.

demo of resonance http://youtu.be/yjVQwEHAz5M

I just found a loose bit of slate, gonna try this..

by touching it with a finger he is damping the oscillations allowing it to work again.

I too am addicted to slate engraving and limit the speed to 1500 mm/min. I also removed all acceleration calculations from the firmware as they cause the laser to burn more when changing speed.

BTW, mm/min seems like a horrible metric for laser etchers, why not mm/sec?

I am addicted too. Every machine is different and I think my 2W laser is a little less powerful than that. When I changed the rapid feed rate to 1000, my lines stopped being wavy and came out nice and crisp. I think that my machine could not handle the transition between 700 and 2000 accurately.

Hi, I am a slateaholic. I have even set up a spreadsheet for inventory.

Oh yeah!! AND on a holiday weekend. This little machine is sure getting a workout. Tomorrow I intend to work on my cousin's unit patch. I only have a 240x240 px image to work with. I am working on increasing the size and clarity to something worth printing. Yet another learning experience.
