Gimp is powerful, but easy it is not lol.
There is a lot to learn in image processing, the first thing to learn is jpeg=bad, it is the 48k mp3 of images, uses very similar compression algorythms, the keyword being 'lossy', it is a description of the image, not the image itself. It eas designed for photographic use where background noise woukd be concealed. Use gif or png for all image work.

In line with nottinghams comment about how firemen like a drink, I was trying to think of a firehose nozzle beertap joke.
I failed though, i got nuthin.

ok here it is.  Png will import at 100 mm at .1 resolution. so you might have to shrink it up just a tad for a piece of slate coaster.

HAHA. Thanks Nottingham. Now, how did you do that? did you insert the image on another layer?

I would like to try my hand as replacing the center piece to make it all look good.

Oh yeah!! AND on a holiday weekend. This little machine is sure getting a workout. Tomorrow I intend to work on my cousin's unit patch. I only have a 240x240 px image to work with. I am working on increasing the size and clarity to something worth printing. Yet another learning experience.

Why not vectorize it?

With inkscape is easy, and after that u can enlarge it as you like!

It's too low res. I started by vecorizing. Then I had to recreate the elements that looked horrible.

Yes. WAY too low res. I am going to stretch by Inkscape wings and rebuild the whole thing. I can get the Maltese cross online easily enough.

Time for some learning!!!!

Idk what image is, but if is a "simple" image (only one color and Bg) its very very simple vectorice it in inkscape

Load the image -> Selet the image -> Shift+Alt+B -> select the option u like (if is one color and bg yo must say accept without touch anything) -> And it generates a bautiful vectoriced image!

I understand that but the original file is really small and crappy. A vector version is even worse.
