Thanks, I was hoping to do those clear acrylic LED displays.   Once I get my machine i'll try the black paint, i'll have to learn how to cut them manually then.  I'll post how it goes.

paint will help with etching. I have done that on 7mm clear acrylic

is it possible to make cut paper art/cards with our lasers? see attached
would you have to make the design a vector? has anyone tried this?
I did this. http://www.BenboxLaser.us/index.php?topic=3076.0

Hi everyone from the UK.
I have been experimenting cutting different materials with a 5.5W laser and T2 software. I can get a nice clean cut using 3mm Obeche wood at a feed of 150 mm/min, full laser power and 3 passes.
This wood is similar to Basswood but stronger and easier to cut (3mm Basswood takes 4 passes).
I have attached pictures of my results.

Nice....but by the look of that board you need   3/4" expanding honeycomb from UK supplier (or Chinese!)
http://www.easycomposites.co.uk/#!/core-materials/aluminium-honeycomb

OR

This is just as good a material avail in UK

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-24-in-x-1-2-in-x-12-in-Plain-Expanded-Metal-Sheet-801417/204225783  and available in the UK as is the  more expensive block exapanding aluminium support.

.
Lasers are wonderful machines..not ONLY  can they cut a finger off BUT  they can also cauterise it at the same time.....

SAFETY -  IS NO ACCIDENT

@Carloss You are getting really nice cuts, is that an EleksMaker laser or a generic one?

It looks like you have a fan but no air assist and as Ross mentioned no raised bed so that makes your results even more impressive. I think you sold me on that laser and wood, if I can find it around here. It looks popular for model making.

Thank you for the comments.
Ross, there is a proper aluminum table underneath the burnt board you can see. It is on stainless steel rods and forms the Y axis of the machine. The board is just an old piece of chipboard to protect the moving table. I will check out the honeycomb material - thanks.
Zax, the machine is a generic Chinese called 1830 (the table size in cm).
The fan you can see is an old computer power supply fan. It helps to clear the smoke which reduces marks on the wood surface and laser lens, but I do have to regularly clean the lens.
Trouble is the fan is static but the laser moves (the X axis)!
I am trying to design some way of channeling the air from the fan through a flexible tube mounted on the laser.
Suggestions welcome!

Thanks guys.

Hi.

Here is my prototype air assist. It uses an airbrush compressor to provide the air and the delivery pipe is attached to the laser.
it seems to give me a cleaner cut - this is 3mm obeche again with the same settings as before.

I have a similar sized compressor and mount it on the floor. Too much vibration!! It also overheats real quickly so it my be my particular unit.

I  still like mine, I get the tank up to 150lbs and then turn the power off. It can run for a very long time without needing a refill. On the output is a pressure regulator, water trap and a flow regulator. I actually have a pile of compressors and this is the only one that I can say I like.

I'm surprised you don't have 5 of them plumbed in series to get 750PSI with a 0.5mm nozzle. If the laser doesn't burn thru, you could blast thru.

As I said in the other thread its for the CNC and that machine is nice enough to share its air supply.

ggallant I am having the same problems, compressor motor too hot to touch after 30 mins and much vibration. I am going to look for an alternative compressor. Space is at a premium as I live on a narrowboat.

Oh dear, my cutting trials have come to an abrupt end.
Three controller boards have failed in 2 weeks. The latest one, fitted Friday failed after less than an hour. It seems to be the '12 volt power converter' that fails. The power supply that came with the machine is 24V.
All was well until I connected the 5.5W laser, which has also worked well for a number of weeks.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
