3d printed digital sundial

If you haven't seen this, take a look.  One of the coolest things I've seen made from a 3d printer.

not to be negative but this has been around for a while, I think there are derivatives on thingiverse. It is indeed very cool. I tried printing this a long time ago on a badly setup printer and it was a mess. you need a very well calibrated printer for this to work properly. The only down side I see is it only does a certain section of time, 10 to 4pm I think. this said, super cool. I am a little jealous of anyone able to print this quality print.
I also like the explanations and the availability of the video in french. I have only sen this on thingiverse, it got on the front page.

Yeh I saw the same video at least a year ago, did not even bother  trying though. The last time I had black ABS I thought the stuff was cursed, so hard to get good results with it at first but once I got it working ok .. I used it all.
My new printer is probably capable though I am still dialing in the ABS settings and not sure if the standard 0.4mm nozzle is up to it.
Something like this needs to be metal imo, all the channels are straight so something like an ablative spark etching machine coukd do it in steel, it would just take a few weeks probably.

edit: or a few hours if you own one of these

You can actually do EDM at home... I have seen it done but this was a while ago.
I did wonder in the past how mush this design would cost printed at somewhere like shapeways..? too much, more than a cheap watch that's for sure!
