Cutting Exotic Woods
« on: June 09, 2017, 07:11:53 AM »
One of my BCL users makes custom guitars and was kind enough to send me scrap woods that he uses to make them. He asked me to see which woods I could cut.

Attached are the photos of my results. I engraved the wood name on each piece.

I used a 1.6 watt laser diode.

Results:

1. Sitka Spruce was about 3mm thick and I could cut all the way through.
2. Birdseye Maple was about 3mm thick and I could cut all the way through.
3. Poplar was about 9mm and was too thick to cut on my main laser machine which has no Z axis.
4. African Blackwood was about 2mm and charred really bad when trying to cut it. I had to abort the cut attempt.
5. Ebony was about 9mm and charred really bad when trying to cut it. Cut aborted.
6. Basswood was about 9mm and too thick to cut.
7. Indian Rosewood was about 2mm and charred really bad when trying to cut it. Cut aborted.
8. Brazllian Rosewood was about 2mm and charred really bad when trying to cut it. Cut aborted.
9. Mahogany was about 5mm and charred really bad when trying to cut it. Cut aborted.

Last photo shows the laser tools I created in their own folder for these tests.

Note: I mis-spelled one of the woods...it should have been Birdseye Maple.
