Laser Engraver Improvements
« on: August 24, 2017, 08:00:10 PM »
So I got sick of my Y axis motor cables getting stuck between the acrylic and frame and messing up some projects. Instead of getting mad, I got creative and made some cable chain.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vt4ylc4TBQ

I took the chain mounts and remixed them onto stonemull's nema mounts
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2411551

I used these chain links
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2172918

The end piece was made from the end bracket of the links and a 2020 connector that I found on Thingiverse

I am currently working on my x axis in my spare time.

I can share my remixed files when I get to a computer if you are interested in those links

I like them because they are two pieces. I consider them retrofit versions

Thanks,

I did all of this in Tinkercad. I am starting to get the hang of fusion 360 and it is a lot more powerful and I can actually make things look nice :)

Hopefully, I will be able to get my stuff from tinkercad into fusion so my stuff is not spread everywhere.

Thanks for the offer but I am struggling to print a platform jack which I need more. I found some cheap chain link things on eblag
so have taken the easy way out. I will have to print the end support  bits to attach the chain though. If you have remixed the end bits
then I am definitely interested.
How is the plastic holding up to the laser light?
Is fusion 360 free? I am still using tinkercad and still learning from it.

If you bought the cable chain and need ends, go to thingiverse and search for Stonemull (user). I took his mounts and remixed them to fit my chain. His is designed for the "standard" size.

The plastic is holding up find. There is no direct contact, so no worries.

Fusion360 is free to students and hobbyists. Tinkercad is great for learning how to think in 3D, but Fusion offers a lot more possibilities. Think Legos (just the blocks) vs Knex. Get your feet wet then get a real piece of software. I like fusion, but there is also openSCAD (if you like to program more than draw), sketchup, simplify3D (not free, but all in one software), selfCAD (not free, but all in one online software), meshmixer and the list goes on. download them all I say and play around until you find the one for you.

superb, thanks for the pointers. I will take a look at stonewalls designs.
For the moment I like tinkercad, it is perfect for the level I am at. I am not very patient with the design side of things and I love the fact that tinkercad is browser based so also works in Linux...

Hi,

If the chain cable is big enough so that you can pull the wire through without cutting the white connecter head off can you please send me a link to the files ?

moonie, just measure the widest part of the connector and then choose a cable chain of suitable size. When I ordered mine online they gave the inside dimensions of the cable chain...

Here is a link to the chain I printed
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2146995

It took me 21 links per side, though I may add one or two more for safety sake.

The mounts I made for the nema motor and rail remixes of the mounts from the link above married to Stonemull's mounts and some 2020 bracket I found. I will post them shortly when I get to them

Here are the files.
You will need 2x of the "Motor_Mount_Y_Axis.stl" files printed.

I have not yet finished the X axis chain and do not have a piece made for the frame yet.

I like openscad, and have a few of my openscad butcherjobs published over at thingiverse.

I'll second openscad. A nice feature is the ability to design in 3D and export as 2D svg for laser cutting, png for laser etching, for stl for 3D printing. Coming from a programming background it makes sense to me.

Some more artistically talented friends think it is completely useless. They would rather use a mouse to place/move components.
