Laser doesn't cut evenly
« on: September 26, 2017, 09:12:08 AM »
Hi everyone. I have been trying to cut some things lately and I've got an issue.
As you see, some places are nicely cut while on some other parts the cut isn't visible at all. The plywood may not have been perfectly leveled but I doubt such a small difference would matter (?). Besides, even when cutting small things where there is physically no way that the height is different even by 1mm it happens. The next thing is, I noticed that the laser "glow" of blue light isn't even while cutting, I mean sometimes it gets stronger and then weakens, I don't know if that's normal? Anyway, what do you think may have caused that? I'm using 2.5w laser and the settings were 130 feed rate with 5 passes :/

That looks like a dieing laser. I assume you were at full power. That should have burned the heck out of it at 130

Yes, that's right, max power set to 255 and did that in 5 passes (2.5w). The plywood is 3mm thick and it was elevated so it was like 2-3cm from the "head of the laser".
Dying laser? It does that kind of thing right from the start, though I didn't cut much. Should I write to eleks for a replacement? I bought it quite some time ago but haven't gotten really round to it. I'm pretty scared that our chineese brothers wouldn't want to cooperate, assuming it's really a laser fault. Is there any way to troubleshoot that? :/
Thanks in advance

Might check the power supply voltage to see if it is varying. I think the supply they provide is marginal for the 2.5 Watt head. I plan to move to an old computer power supply one of these days.

yup it could be a failing power supply too.  I would get out the multi meter and make sure you are getting 12volts to the laser head when you click it on full power.  Getting anyone in China to honor any warranty is not realistic.  Not to mention I dont know that lasers come with a warranty.

Chinese warranty = you break, you buy!

The warranty last as long as it takes to ship it

Ok, so will try to find someone with a multimeter and possibly find a more powerful power supply and try it out.
But generally, how would a properly working 2.5w work at 130 feed rate and 5 passes? I was considering moving to the 5.5w, do you know where is it available to buy? I haven't seen it on the eleksmaker store
I've found only that on banggood, but it's a dc, has anyone had contact with that module? EleksMaker® LA03-5500 445nm 5500mW Blue Laser Module With Heatsink For DIY Laser Engraver Machine

There is also a 7w for similar price but I guess that's just the same 5.5w but pushed to the limit?

Answering your points to the best of my ability:
1. @130 5 passes, you should be through or close to being through a 3mm piece of plywood
2. 5.5w is more power full, but the beam is bigger and differently shaped (less like a circle and more like a rectangle). I cannot speak for the 5.5w as I do not own one.
3. Yes, the 7W is an over powered 5.5W. If I read everyone else on this forum correctly, the diode used is 6W for the 5.5w, 7w, 10, etc. The 7w will not last long

I have a 5.5W on an A5 frame. Great for etching but getting a sharp focus for cutting is not so good. Building a 500mm x 500mm machine with 500mW, 1.6W & 2.5W modules on quick release mounts.
