My CoreXY Adventure
« on: November 09, 2017, 08:33:12 PM »
As most of you know (and are probably already sick of  :P), I have an A5 clone machine that I started this whole laser addiction with. After many attempts to repair the dang machine, I gave up an bought myself an A3 Pro. Now I have this A5 machine with the old white POM wheels that don't work just sitting in my garage begging for something to do. Instead of buying those pieces of crap or having to make new plates to handle the OpenBuilds V wheels, I embarked upon an adventure. An adventure to convert my A5 machine into a CoreXY system.

Why?  .......................BECAUSE I CAN!!!!!  ;D

So far, I am still in the design phase. That is an adventure in an of itself. After many setbacks in Fusion 360 (remember to backup your files to your hardrive!!!!), I am getting closer to what I think will be a functional machine. Only time will tell though.

Now, that being said, I know the A5 size is very limiting. If I were to use this as a laser engraver, pen plotter or even a 3D printer, I know the size limitation does not justify the amount of work that I have put into this project. In response to that, I have these things to say:

1. This is a proof of concept using the material I have available
2. For the most part, the components I have designed are modular and could be installed on a larger machine.
3. This is a great way to learn more about Fusion360 and just plain old 3D design
4. Because a man need a hobby  ;)

Please don't judge just yet. I have much to do yet to make this printable. Suggestions or comments are always welcome though.

Of course I will. Don't be ridiculous (see this for history https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-0pLiRP0JM)

This thread will be a little slow until I start actually putting the dang thing together. Maybe I will even do a build video.....

looks like 3d printer guides around rod/rails to slide back and forth.

Lumenlabs used ceramic coated rods and delrin as the material that glided along the rods.

I bet that is better than what I am using. I found a nice linear bearing that can be 3d printed and resized it to fit 1/2” EMT conduit. It slides very well based on the tests I have done. We will find out if it works in real life hopefully soon.

Ok, One word of advice. BACK UP YOUR FUSION 360 FILES!!!! Fusion asked me if I wanted to recover my project and I clicked yes and that resulted in me losing 2 weeks of design. Yeah.......That was fun

Well, I was able to get back in the game.
Attached is the latest rendering of my design and the first picture of the first parts.
More to come

I have a spacer between them and plan to use plain 608 beatings with the belts. I hope to have everything printed this week so we will see how it works. I have the spacer to help keep the belts in place.

I have already found some things I want to change in the design on the motor mounts but was able to do so with a snips and a drill vs having to reprint. I see some potential issues with bolt placement as well but think I will be able to make it work. As I said, it is a work in progress and this is v1.

For the motor mounts, there are pieces that slide into the v slot. The t nuts I have do not work with those pieces so I removed them. Also, the holes were too small for my M5. The main piece was taken from Thingiverse and I think the holes were made for M4. A snips and a drill made everything right. I have yet to nake the modifications in the fusion file but I will get there.

Hopefully this can be a setup for virtually any size.

Almost have all four corner pieces printed!!!! YAY. Then it is to the X axis parts.

I am hosting Thanksgiving tomorrow and plan on having my 3D printer in full form. Many of my family have not seen it in action.

So, instead of starting a new thread....

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it. Hope you have a great time with family, friends and a full belly.

For those of you who do not celebrate Thanksgving.....why not????  ;D

Happy Thanksgiving (aka American Christmas in my house).

Maybe you can print something appropriate and functional: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1155673

Enjoy the holiday!

I printed about 22 of these and my wife and daughter painted them. They are going to be giveaways to everyone who comes over. I made a design for a coaster but ran out of time so I couldn’t burn them  :'(
