engraving on carbon fiber??
« on: January 23, 2018, 05:16:56 AM »
Hi,
I have been asked if it is possible to laser engrave carbon fibre... I see that several people have done so successfully online but...
I have a 2.5W and the K40, is this sufficient or do I nee 'MORE POWER' ???
I presume all we are doing here is burning the glue as I doubt these lasers can 'cut' carbon fibre..
=)
Laser: 2500mw A5 eleksmaker L5, K40 with Cohesion3D mini board, air assist, laser pointer etc..
OS: Windows 7, Debian, OpenSuse, Kali
Software: T2Laser, laserweb4, Repitier, Cura
Prusa i3 Clone GT2560

I was unsuccessful trying to cut CF fabric with my 40W CO2.

An abrasive water jet makes easy work of CF panels but is a little beyond most of us for hobby use.

thanks for the reply Zax, any idea if the 2.5 diode and / or the K40 CO2 will engrave nicely on CF?
They want engraving on it and I am not sure I will get sufficient depth without melting everything into a horrible mess

I was only able to melt the resins, which did not produce a good result (or smell).

thanks, that's what I was afraid of...
I will not even try it, not worth it...

I've had a little go at engraving cf myself and had perfect results. Engraved with 2.5W - T2 at 1500 speed and 255 power. Smells horrible so you'll want some good ventilation.

Wow nice results...
I might have to find some CF to test on as spoiling a whole hockey stick would be a shame!!
thanks for the update, appreciated

That's excellent, there must be different resins as I have a 2.5W and tried everything and couldn't get results like that.

I've got a fair few different cf bits around i'm planning to experiment with, see if there's any difference in results. I found the key to engraving just about anything (acrylic / aluminium / glass / carbon fiber) is to 'paint' / mark the surface with a black sharpie before engraving. Bit of iso to clean it up and have got some excellent results on most surfaces  :D

I didn't cost it, maybe that was my issue. I will try that next time although as you say it stinks and is probably not healthy.
