help! broke glass print bed!!!
« on: April 12, 2018, 01:09:46 AM »
Trying to get the scanned (3d systems sense scanner!) print of a colleges body off the print bed I cracked the glass print platform into bits. I think I saw that as it is a heated bed I need to use  borosilicate glass.
Is this the case or can I use any old glass? (I have the glass from an old paper scanner I can use, no idea what glass this is.).
Is there a preferred thickness? The original is 3mm but I am not sure if this has an effect on printing..
Do you have a preferred supplier for replacement glass? I will probably get some off eblag but will also look for a local supplier.

I am also thinking of using an aluminium plate in place of the glass with a buildtak layer.
Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using aluminium over glass?

In looking for build platform alternatives to glass I see that some use Polycarbonate sheet.
Anyone tried this? I also notice some using pcb sheets (no idea what these are made of).

I am looking for something that works with PLA and allows me to bend it so the print pops off..
any suggestions welcome, I will keep looking and post results here!

apparently PEI (Polyeth Erimid)  is very popular. Anyone got a supplier in the EU?

I have settled for a aluminium plate and the buildtek clone. Will see how this works.

I tired aluminum once and it did not work out well. As the aluminum heats it will warp some and would never leave the level surface that you need. On my bigger printer I use mirror's because they tend to be a little thicker and are usually quite flat. Then I put PEI on the mirror. Using the laser I even engraved a logo on the back of the mirror.

On my smaller printer I use regular window glass. I have had these break several time and it was always on a larger print using ABS. As the ABS contracted it put stress on the glass and it cracked.

My solution was to make the bigger prints on the big printer which had mirrors.

How do you put PEI on the mirror? What does the laser etching do?

I laser etch the back side of the mirror just to put a logo on it. You see the logo as you print. It does not help the print it just looks better.

The PEI has adhesive on both the back so you just stick it onto the glass and roll it smooth, and then you prints stick onto the PEI and come off easily after things cool down.

The reality is I have a half dozen mirrors with PEI, Buildtek, hair spray, glue stick, ... so I can choose what works best for what I am printing.

And I thought you etched an obscenity on the glass to chase the plastic away.

All I have to do is look at it and it tries to get away.

ouch!!!! I hope it does not warp... a mirror would have been much cheaper than the aluminium plate and buildtek clone...
I will give it a go and see if it stays flat. I only print with PLA so worst case I dont heat up the bed...

I use ABS most of the time so I do heat things up a lot. Good luck with it.
