Interesting project.

He says "...The software provided in most seller's links is NOT the best option..." but does not tell me WHAT software HE is using?

Yeah, that laser shield is not adequate.

The mechanical upgrades he made make some sense.
Mounting The controller to the gantry means most of the wiring no longer has to move along the rails. Of course now the power wire will have to follow the gantry. The limit switches and all are on the gantry. So all the wiring is much neater. Not sure about the shields, as @Agastar already said. Not perfect as you are adding weight to a major moving part. That is going to reduce speed somewhat. And the weight is all on one side.

The documentation would be a help but I am sure most of it is available on this site. The Firmware is also probably similar if not the same as spoken of in this site.

He missed a few things that would have made it a more valuable.
Laser adjustment extensions or device. More difficult to adjust laser with everything that is hung on the laser.
Did not solve the belt adjusters at all.
Flipping the carriage which allows more movement in that X axis.

The $109 package includes a 3 axis board upgrade, why? He did not add anything that needs another axis!

I would not mind getting a hold of the "2X+" board, but I can solder into the riser pins, to get the same functions he has in the board.

Honestly the PWM is needed but that requires a hardware mod to the laser module. A couple of us here are working on that. Other than that the third axis is desirable to me so I can add height adjust for focus change on multiple passes for cutting. Other than that the rest he mentioned isn't that interesting to me

Just buy an L6 board for $20 and you have all the same input/outputs.

Yeah, I'm not going to fund the project, it's too much $ for what he offers. It is nice to see that someone has recognized the need to improve these machines though.

(Of course, we all recognized that already.)

Zax, I picked up an L8 which looks almost identical to your L6 except it doesn't have the jumper between the weak button and the radial electrolytic capacitor; what is the function of that jumper on the L6 please?

Yes moving to a 3 or 4 axis board gives you the I\O for the buttons he added. But that add in board is simple and does not require any real skill to install. That actually was a smart move on his part.

An L6 board (L8 now) is just as easy to install on a laser frame and uses the same setup steps as the original boards. From what I understand all of the limits are tied to D9 on the Eleks board. His Gold and Platinum upgrades are the L6\L8 board

I saw that a couple of posts had connection diagrams for the TTL board. So there is progress there. Still waiting on my board.

The Kickstarter did mention PWM control, but since some lasers do not seem to handle it well, that will be hit or miss. You peoples work on the TTL is a better option.

Has anyone checked into his claim of 20% (up to 25%) more cutting power by replacing the lens with a glass lens?

None of the packages mention a lens.

It's labeled Z-D and appears to connect the capacitor between Vin and the laser voltage regulator, no idea what it does.

I tried a premium glass lens, yes it did help but the improvement was marginal. The benefit as I've posted here before was a smaller spot size = higher power density. I'm mainly interested in engraving and it was actually worse with the glass lens, but for cutting I could see a 10% improvement claim but 20-25% sounds unrealistic.

Since I do cutting, can you give me a URL of one? I'd like to read up on them and maybe buy one to test out. Thanks...

@Zax
Yes, please give the specs for the lens or a URL. Too many to choose from.
I am more interested in cutting.
