30x40cm Aluminum Extrusion Lengths
« on: July 12, 2016, 12:50:59 PM »
Hi,

Can someone with the larger kit please let me know what the actual lengths are for 20x40 side rails, 20x40 top rail, and 20x20 front and back rails. I'm trying to get an idea of what the aluminum extrusions are going to run to upgrade to a larger size.

Thanks
John

I have the larger A3 frame.

My rails are:

18.5 inches wide
17.0 inches deep.

My left to right rails mount to the inside of the front/back rails.

well, it looks like it would be about $20 for the extruded aluminum for the A3 frame pieces.

Not a bad price. Where do you plan on getting it from?

Yeah that's it. Here is a direct link to the extrusions and hardware. Best part is you can order specific sizes to the mm.

With some simple tools these aluminum rails are very easy to cut your self.
I have a blade designed to cut aluminum that I use in my miter saw. The cuts that
I get are just as clean as the cuts you would get when you order a specific lenght.
So I just order the rails at 1000mm and cut to the lengths that I want. That is how I built
the frame for my laser cutter and for making my new 3D printer.

I never actually looked at the price when you ordered a specific length, buy in bulk keeps the shipping costs down. I just keep a stock of rails (like 5 or 6 of each size) and just grab one when I want to build something and cut it to length I want. And there are always the smaller pieces left over for other small things.

The prices I've seen, it was more expensive to buy pre defined sizes than it was to buy the sizes pre-cut and that included shipping. This is why I buy from them. If I had found it to be cheaper I would have done the same as you.

It's good to shop around and find the best option. I'm all for saving some money so if you have the tools and can get it cheaper then go for it.

The prices seem very reasonable to me. I've purchased from 80/20 outlet on ebay and they have some great deals for bulk but I like these pre-cut prices and options.

Anyone know the precise information for what you should order for these rails. I wasnt thinking ordered some T slotted and they are too big. Also they werent tapped which meant I spent a bunch of time trying to tap them so it was a waste all around.
So what size should the tapped screw holes be?
I was looking at us.misumi-ec.com but I dont know what the specs should be to request overall...

I don't know what tap size to use on those but the 20 series and 20x40 series should be a close match to what the units come with from China.
