Slate?
« on: October 20, 2016, 08:37:43 PM »
Ok I scoured the forum and havent found anyone that has tried slate.  Has anyone tried to engrave slate with a diode laser and not reported back yet?

I found slate coasters at cost plus world market for 4 bucks.  So I guess I'll give it a try this weekend unless anyone can tell me its a no go!

I've only done it on my CO2 with great results, not sure how it will do on the diode lasers. It's worth a try, as sand stone (like those thirsty coasters) worked pretty well.

soooo. Yeah slate works great.  I picked up a set of slate coasters from cost plus world market for 7.99. Im rastering with t2 right now and it looks great.  I'll probably do 3 rasters to make it deep and permanent.  I like to follow up with a vector outline to make it pop.   If you want an awesome christmas present for someone on the cheap, definitely do this!  I will post some pictures when I get these done.  Probably later tonight.

this is a present for a friend who is a motorcycle officer and is his team logo.  so I went with three raster burns then a vector then I tried to paint the while line blue with acrylic paint.  Speed was 1000 with a 2.5 laser.  I liked it better before the vector.  I think some of the letters turned out worse with a vector clean up.  The blue paint didnt turn up at all and my painting skills are horrible.  If I try again I'll tape off the section first so I get straight lines.  I'm gonna make a set of 4 so I'll try other speeds too.

PS no making fun of my mirror image grid board!!! I clearly had my x and y flipped when I first started.  It still functions just fine :)

500 looks best so far.  It takes forever though.  1 1/2 hours.  Air assist seems to have no effect so I turned it off.  I'll post pictures of the several different speeds when this last one gets done. The worst one was the multiple rasters so far

That looks very nice, I'd say that's optimized for the material.

so here they are.  left is 3 rasters. next 1 burn at 1000 speed. third is 1 at 500 speed and air assist.  Right is 1 at 500 speed and no air assist.  I like 500 speed with the air assist.

At first look, the 2nd one looked the best to me but on closer inspection I think the right one may get my vote.

They're all excellent, and remember it's a natural product so results can vary from piece to piece.

Yes I like the second one also.  I think the faster speed made the stone underneath show through more which gave it a different hew.  I think the third one is the most complete cut though. and every piece will vary.  Slate is my new favorite thing to engrave.

Yeah, second one is my vote for the tire detail but the last one is easier to read.

What watt laser are you running?
