My grand father used to make these by hand! We need Laser plans for these now!

I do not know if we can cut 1/8" hardwood but these are pretty nice too!

I like this clock design, darker wood under lighter. Clock guts are easy to find!

yeah just a 2500mw.  If anyone gives it a go with a 5000mw post some pictures.  I would love to see a reason to upgrade! nothing like an excuse to poor more time and money into a hobby!

Christmas slate projects on the agenda:
cheese cutting board for the gf's parents (http://www.worldmarket.com/product/slate+and+wood+cheese+cutting+board.do?&from=fn)

coasters for all the guy's man caves probably 5 sets at least (http://www.worldmarket.com/product/square+slate+coasters%2C+set+of+4.do?&from=Search)

a yard/door marker with the gf's brother's last name for the front yard 18"x 12" (http://www.worldmarket.com/product/slate-cheese-board.do?&from=Search)

anyone know any good programs for making monograms and such or is inkscape my best bet?  I've been putting off learning how to use it.  Zax tutorial seems straight forward but when I try it I can only get it to do about half of what I want, when I want it.  Of course the other half happens when I dont want it.  Lol such is life.

I use Inkscape but I had to watch a lot of video tutorials when I first started. Let me know what you're trying to do and I'll see if I can help you figure out how in Inkscape.

yeah and I'v changed my settings.  I'm now make a png in inkscape 800mm x 800mm.  Scale it down in t2 to 80mm x 80mm.  resolution .1 speed 900 and boom. magic.  Here is the inkscape file if you want a template for any of your christmas gifts.  Just make something pretty and export as png from the file menu.  select whole page and give it a name.

I took your suggestions and gave it a try.

I really like how the dog came out but I think I need to darken up the inside of the VOLS text or just leave it black. As it is, you can barely see the highlights for the text because there isn't enough contrast between the two.

Here is a list of things I did in an image editor before opening it up in T2L. I know, I could have done most of what I did in T2L but I needed to remove the background and since I already had it open in the editor I made the other quick changes.

1. Remove orange background
2. Converted the image to grayscale
3. Inverted the image
4. Centered the image in a white canvas with equal height and width

Resolution: .1
Speed: 900
Engraving: Diagonal
Output Size: 100mm X 100mm

You achieved different levels on slate, oh wow, that's next level stuff!

Really nice work, was that with a true TTL laser or just the modded driver and PWM?

Thanks Zax, I was not sure it would work and I almost set the image to be just black and white but I thought I'd give it a try.

This was done with my scratch built laser module. The heatsink came from ebay, the used $20 M140 2W diode from DTR Laser, and the driver I designed. The driver varies the output current to the laser diode based on the PWM signal from the Arduino.

According to my laser power meter, the power is pretty linear between 25%, 50%, 75% AND 100%. I have not gone up by 1% increments since my LPM only reads on decimal place :( but it does come on at S1 and my grayscale tests have also shown a pretty linear response too.

I'm including a picture of the laser module I put together and used for this. Right now I only have the 500mW and this 2W module so the 2W is all I have used lately.

Oh, and a huge thanks to @nottingham82 for the settings. This is the first and only one I've done so far and I couldn't have done that without his help.

Wow! That looks great. I haven't done too much experimenting with gray-scale. That looks phenomenal. One other thing. I always out put at 80 or 85mm because the slate is exactly 100mm but because of the decorative side chipping some have a smaller engravable surface than others.
