General Discussion / Looking for a material to cut
« on: July 23, 2016, 02:17:21 AM »
So I am looking for a plastic material that is 1mm thick and laser safe, not to mention that is possible to cut with a 2.5 watt laser. I have a project I am working on and I am hand cutting white styrene sheet by hand. By all means this is the perfect material for this project, as it is thin, non conductive, moisture resistant and

I am lining the inside of a small metal enclosure with the plastic sheet as a isolation from the metal sides and as a passive light decorative element.

The end color I can change myself with paint as long as it is neutral and let's some light pass through.

What Can Be Cut? / Stamps? Has anyone made one?
« on: July 08, 2016, 02:40:52 AM »
So I bought some stamp material for my plotter, and I have reservations over what detail I can achieve with it ( and it hasn't arrived yet ). I do have art store bought linoleum block in grey for stamp making and was considering trying it out in the laser.

Has anyone done this? It seems like a logical idea. The medium gray color should absorb the laser and linoleum didn't contain pvc ( if what they sell at the art stores is real linoleum).

So has anyone tried it has anyone found a better material? Thanks in advance.

T2 Engraving / Sleep fail
« on: May 31, 2016, 08:00:00 AM »
So I just want to point out that T2 laser will not override sleep on Windows 10 ( I assume it would be the same for all versions). I had an instance where it was cutting and my computer went in to partial sleep mode and the laser stayed on and the machine stopped moving. I can back to the box and opened it and the laser was still on full power.

Now this is not a knock against T2. We should all be wary of running machines like this and having computers that could do this and monitor what's happening closely. So this is my fault. I just thought I would share and maybe suggest that if it is possible to prevent in software the computer completely going to sleep while running the laser. So only once GRBL has been sent until it has stopped.

What Can Be Cut? / 2mm black Delrin, is it safe?

I was wondering if it is safe or possible to cut 2mm Delrin with ours lasers. I have a few ideas and it's a great material.

Projects / Started making a box solution
« on: May 26, 2016, 04:32:34 PM »
So I hope I am putting this in the right place.

So I have the A5 laser and way to be able to use it at home and at work. So transportable is a must. I am going to add a fan and filter to the back first and secure the laser to the box so it won't move. I will keep updating this thread as I make progress.

The box is all aluminum, and previously served in the Swiss military. So it's nice and rugged and the perfect size.

Attached are some test fit photos.

What I need to do, use a bitmap image to engrave a pattern or photo. Then use a vector path that can be repeated 6 times or so to cut out the engraving precisely.

Now I am sure there would be a way to combine g-code files or something. But I need a solution that can be quick and on the fly to make changes. Say swap the bitmap but cut out the same shape.

I have T2 and it works so well, but I can't just ask for every feature under the sky to be added.

And maybe my understanding of the DXF format is antiquated as I only know it to include vector information and has no way to include bitmap information. I belive EPS can link to external bitmap files. I have also heard of some software supporting PDF, which could be a solution.

General Discussion / MOD-t 3D
« on: May 24, 2016, 11:54:14 AM »
Anyone know about these? 399$ no real set up, auto leveling and a 15x12x10 cm build space. I am pretty tempted. It sounds like allege guess work has been removed or it got a lot of good marketing speak. Has anyone here used one?

Trouble Shooting / Wavy curves
« on: May 22, 2016, 12:58:51 PM »
So I recently purchased a small A5 laser from another forum memeber. He had it assembled an working. I updated the firmware via T2 Laser and switched it to PWM. It was difficult to update the firmware to take. I kept getting a lot of problems and very strange actions like cutting rectangles instead of squares or cutting things 20x larger. But I solved all that thanks to this forum and the great guides that Zax has written. Now the only single thing I have issue with is its a little wavy in curves. I assume this is a tension issue with the belts. But the belts seem the same as my larger A3 laser that works perfectly. Should I look somewhere else or should I try more tension?

Projects / DC motor bracket

Test cut black 4mm plexi.

Cut and engraved using T2 laser. The engrave and the cut are not related both just tests and test material. The plexi I went for a clean cut over all else and cut at half speed and 240 power. Used multi pass and overall made around 25 passes.

I think in the future I need to place items like this over a grid so that it can cut cleanly all the way through as just a little bit was left and all pieces pushed out easily.  It was a good learning experience and next time I may use full power and slower feed for less passes.

Spare Parts Sources / Laser modules
« on: May 01, 2016, 04:55:38 AM »
Does anyone know where to buy laser modules? Besides bang good or Alibaba? I have no idea how long the laser will actually last. I hear that they are rated for 6000 hours but that sounds optimistic at best.

I was thinking of buying a few different ones for different tasks. I want a UV one so I assume around 300nm ( off the top of my head ) and possibly a lower powered one just for engraving

What Can Be Cut? / Sperrholz ( hobby plywood )
« on: May 01, 2016, 01:09:47 AM »
This stuff is cheap. Like 2€ for 5 A5 sheets. I bought it at OBI which is a bit like a Home Depot stateside.

I ran it through T2 laser made 10 passes at full power but ran it fast as I didn't want to scorch the wood. So maybe 600 or 700 for speed. This is a 2.5 watt laser for reference.

Very clean cut and almost no Kerf. It's cheap wood and not very strong but it cuts very well.

I will try and post pictures later as I am having a hard time doing so from my iPhone ( files are too large )

General Discussion / Laser on a 3D printer?
« on: April 12, 2016, 01:52:30 PM »
Maybe I should start another topic for this. But I have a question.

I was about to buy a laser. Had my model and power decided and then I stopped.

There is another topic on here asking about adding a z axis for milling. Now I don't need to mill, but I like the idea of dropping the laser incrementally to cut thicker material.

I also like the idea of 3D printing. So the question is, has anyone here added a laser to a 3D printer? I found the Prusa i3 in my budget and has a 20cm x 20cm build area. Not huge but maybe adequate.  Could it maybe run the T2 software? Oh I should have made this its own post.

General Discussion / Hello from Germany as well
« on: April 09, 2016, 11:17:50 AM »
Hi, I am in Nürnberg Germany.

I have been having a hard time sourcing a laser here and the only place I have found is eBay. I am about to buy one this weekend. I am thinking of getting the 2500 mw model that can do 30x40 cm I believe. I have found it on eBay for 320€ roughly plus shipping and believe that this is the best way for me to get one.

I want to try burning designs in fabric as well as etching wood. Possibly cutting thin ply as well.

So there is my introduction.

If anyone knows a better way to get one in Europe, please let me know. I would like to avoid paying customs when possible.

So hello everyone and thanks for the forum!
