EleksMaker Mana SE / Another TTL Module Question
« on: June 22, 2020, 08:23:00 AM »
Hi Folks,

I just bought a 5W module with an outboard controller (see attached) to upgrade my cutter.  It needs a 5v TTL signal in.
I've been away from my laser setup for awhile, and seem to have forgotten almost everything I learned about configuring the hardware, so I'm back at the bottom of the learning curve again.  I have a Mana 5.2 board, running a 3-axis setup with a 2.5W non-TTL module.  The laser is currently connected to the motor output, and PWM seems to be working to control the intensity.

I've been reading through the threads here, and I think I have a handle on what I need to do, but before going ahead and letting the magic smoke out, I thought I'd check and get some confirmation.

So as I understand it from reading the thread here, I'm going to:
i) power the laser with an independent power supply into the 12v in on the board.
ii) connect the Analog - input to the Servo ground on the Mana
iii) connect the Analog + to the Servo PWM on the Mana.
iv) set the selector on the board to TTL.
v) cross fingers and hope!

Sound about right? TIA for your advice!

BenCutLaser / Filled text with BCL? (CLOSED)
« on: March 24, 2018, 02:21:56 PM »
Is there a simple way to do a filled-text etch with BCL?  99% of my use is cutting, for which BCL is great, but I've been asked to do a couple of signs.
I've used the add text to put in a few part numbers and things, but it only does outline (unless I'm missing something?).
Should I just create an image of the text I want to burn, and then treat it as a B&W or grayscale engraving?

Cutting / Air Assists Compared?
« on: March 20, 2018, 08:28:38 AM »
Hi All,
I have a Banggood 2.5W with Pawpawpaw's air assist, and it's working OK.  I've been doing a lot of cutting, and I'm wondering if anyone has done a comparison between the low-pressure high-volume approach that Pawpawpaw's has with the high-pressure/low-volume that you would get with a directed compressed air stream.  I've been reading through the posts, and it seems folks have gone with one method or the other, but I haven't seen anyone who's tried both and settled on a winner.

Is a compressed air setup going to produce enough of a difference/improvement in cutting ability for me to justify investing in a newer air assist rig?

BenCutLaser / Speaking of re-sizing windows (RESOLVED)
« on: February 13, 2018, 05:24:06 AM »
... would it be possible to allow re-sizing of the workspace window?  As you can see, the Toolpath Operations window is pushed off the right side of the screen, and resizing the Tools pane doesn't move the right edge of the workspace.  It's not really impeding my ability to use the software, but some of the items in the text/image pane are half off my screen.

I loaded this particular piece, as this is typical of the work I'm going to be using BCL for.  It's working well so far, but I have a large number of objects that are either identical, or very slightly different (hole placement, overall size etc). I'd prefer not to have to chop up the original drawing into many smaller ones.  Having a scroll bar on the toolpath pane would be a huge help, since I'm not necessarily cutting all the pieces at the same time.
Or is there already one there, and I just can't see it?

BenCutLaser / Saving resized windows? (RESOLVED)
« on: February 12, 2018, 06:24:47 PM »
Way back in the dim, distant path, Ralph was kind enough chat me through getting BCL up and running, and he had a key-combo that when I re-sized windows (eg. the tool parameter/laser tool library panes).  I've totally forgotten how to do it, and I re-read the manual for 1.5, and didn't see mention of it.

What's the magic combo?  Is it CTRL drag, ALT drag, or did I dream the whole thing?

BenCutLaser / Setting Autocad Workspace? (RESOLVED)
« on: April 21, 2017, 02:49:46 PM »
I'm posting this here because I don't know if I'm having an Autocad issue or a BCL issue, but BCL seems to be the only program giving me this error.

I'm the first to admit I'm at the bottom of the Autocad learning curve.  I can do some basic drawing and manipulation, scaling and stuff.
What I have not been able to figure out is how to set the size of the workspace.  I can set the origin to where I want it, but when I export my drawings to DXF, BCL says the drawing height and/or width is 19759.4841 mm, and that parts of the drawing are inside the negative work space.

Yet when I bring the DXF into T2 Laser, Inkscape or Illustrator, it scales properly.

Is there some trick to say "here's the extent of the workspace" in Autocad?  I've attached a file that's doing this for me.

General Discussion / What's the advantage to limit switches?
« on: March 21, 2017, 06:05:55 PM »
Thinking about adding home/limit switches to my cutter.  What's the advantage over not having them?  Does it just prevent wear and tear on the belts when it reaches the ends, or are there other functional gains?

General Discussion / Is this the z-axis we've been looking for?
« on: March 20, 2017, 06:10:23 AM »
I haven't spent a lot of time looking at this, as I'm still busy tweaking my 2d cutting.  But eventually I'd like to add a z-axis, and my understanding of the little reading I've done is that a lot of the small, light movements are 5v.

No measure on the weight of this one, but it looks small enough, has a 50mm travel, and is 12v.

General Discussion / Serious power!?!?!
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:49:57 AM »
Just browsing Aliexpress and came across these:

10W LED module

15W LED module

Both look like they're set up for TTL, but no focusing lens.  I'm not sure on what these specs on the 10W Unit is supposed to mean... 18mm focal length, spot diameter 16mm at ≤Φ0.12 (mm).  I mean I know what the focal length is, but have they got the diameter spec backwards?  Is it 0.12 mm at a distance of 16mm?

These things seem to have bigger heat sinks than the 2.5W unit I've got, so they're pumping a lot of juice through them.  I wonder what their lifespan is going to be like?

General Discussion / Which axis to elongate?
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:35:36 AM »
I'd like to be able to cut pieces up to 1m long.  It seems simple, just get a couple of 1m sections of 2040 and swap out the rails.  But which axis would give me the best result?  My thinking right now is it makes more sense to do the y, and leave the x carriage as it is.  I figure there's likely to be more deviation over a 1m gantry than there would be in the two parallel rails of the y axis.

BenCutLaser / COM Port Tab Screen not displaying properly? (RESOLVED)
« on: January 31, 2017, 02:32:02 PM »
Just trying out 1.8.1i on a new laptop.  All other tabs are fine, but the COM port one has the items between the port drop-downs and the G-code windows partially obscured (see attached).

The program works fine, just can't see things like the Home and ResetHome links.

BenCutLaser / Changing feed rates doesn't change feed rate? (RESOLVED)
« on: January 13, 2017, 08:16:20 PM »
Hi All,

I'm trying out BCL with my Banggood 2.5W A3 Laser.
It seems no matter what I set the feed rate to on the parameters page, when I run the G-code the laser speed stays the same (too fast!).  When I do the left/right and up/down tests it's slow, when I run the code, it's fast.

Am I missing something, or is this a limitation of the trial version of BCL?
