Your subject looks to be quite a distance from the lens. Try bringing the subject higher and refocus as you may not be at the optimum distance relative to the laser emitter; I have found this can make a big difference to spot density and shape.

Out of interest what are you using to blow down your air assist tube?

I ultimately messed with the curves till i liked it (that is a real technical term meaning I cant explain why I thought that was best) then I applied the cartoon filter then I inverted the image.  Then I used the paint bucket to fill in the black background white.

Also I forgot to add that I used my 2.5mw ttl laser settings 2000mm/min and 0-180 on the power.

Did you treat the slate surface with any product prior to engraving to get this result?

Just reminded me I must experiement with 3M Spray Mount Repositionable Adhesive on some black paper. It is excellent on displays and leaves hardly a trace on the other surface but gives a tight close interface. Search for 3M50754.

The OP did say he was using 20mm distance [lens mount face to subject I presume]. He could have been at 100mm or anything in between and whilst still able to focus for best spot size will not necessarily be at the optimum distance for the smallest achieveable spot and hence greatest power density. It isn't an easy parameter to measure; I found that trial and error was the only practical method and determined that greatest power density was at 30mm but this will vary from one lens to another as well as the lens mounting. 

I also wonder how close the lens axis is to perpendicular to the face of the laser on these low end items. I suspect this will affect how uniformly the light is gathered hence determining spot shape and power density, to some degree.

Z Axis / Re: Eleksmaker made good on their promise

I presume the laser module mounts though the rectangular aperture in the acrylic but this suggests it needs mounting points on the laser module end plate not on the backplate.  It must be very large (judging by the dimensions given for the package - 45cm x 18cm x 7cm!!) and will lose a lot of engraving area on the Y-axis, hopeless for A5 users I would have thought. It will also impose a heavy rotational cantilever loading and an possibly acceleration and deceleration issues on the X-axis if it realy does weigh 1.5kg (packaged weight) as they state!

Have you possibly got a program or process running in the background that periodically makes unseen demands on processor time or memory at high priority such as attempting to access the internet for an update or some other servicing?

Have a look in Windows Task Manager on the Perfomance tab and then click the Resource Monitor button and see if there is any unexpected activity or memory usage.

Other ideas are:
Clearing caches
Defrag your hard drive
Check in Control Panel | Action Centre | Check for Solutions to unreported problems   see if there are any programs with memory leakage issues.
