T2 Engraving / EleksDraw
« on: April 08, 2017, 05:31:25 PM »
I just assembled an EleksDraw, and the good news is it works great with T2Laser.

It's a nice kit and a very simple build. It came loaded with their mana.hex (which supports CoreXY and servo, both of which are needed for this machine).

All I did was reverse both axis (maybe swapping cables would have the same effect) and change the laser max to 75 as >80 causes the servo to rotate and hit the bracket.

I need to get some better pens to use with it or make a different adapter to hold them and I think it also needs some slight tweaking as circles look a little "egg" shapes. Speaking of that, I ordered an EleksEgg earlier this week so will check that out with T2Laser when it arrives.

If you have any questions about the machine, build or use with T2Laser let me know.

Simple! Use Sketch to draw a box and enable the new hatch feature with a custom spacing (10 mm in this example).

T2 Engraving / Sketch Templates
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:51:48 AM »
Introducing Sketch Templates!

Simply load the template from the File menu or right click the Sketch icon, then edit the text to create a personalized masterpiece in seconds!

They are 100% vector so very fast to engrave and can be resized from the Sketch settings toolbar.

What's even better is they are FREE for T2Laser users!

More packs coming soon, and if you have any suggestions we can create custom packs too. Make sure you are subscribed to my Facebook as in future they will be exclusively released there.

General Discussion / Inkscape plugin
« on: March 07, 2017, 05:05:52 AM »
EleksMaker have released a new Inkscape plugin (download it from their forum) to replace the previous EggBot one, it does a similar job to CorelDraw's hatch output and gives you a pseudo fill.

I'm sure this isn't the desired result, but it's pretty awesome all the same. I call it "drunk fill". You can get it to work correctly, and it works well but I prefer the weird scribble results  ;D .

Is there a German speaker that would be willing to help a fellow German out, he's having problems converting to Grbl 0.9.

It may be because his board doesn't have the jumper or he hasn't correctly loaded the firmware.

Send me a PM if you can help. Thanks!

T2 Engraving / Bezier curves
« on: January 07, 2017, 07:42:21 AM »
Back in v1.3c I added support for most of the common DXF entities, which included splines and beziers (curves and other shapes were already supported, the only exception is text).

I don't really use beziers myself but following a post over on the BCL thread I did some testing.

Here's a quick example using TurboCAD, the bezier imports perfectly.

I've noticed that some programs don't do a great job of exporting them accurately in which case they won't be correct in T2Laser but I can't fix what another program does incorrectly. It will depend on the CAD software, in particular I've noticed some odd errors with Inkscape but not always. So I still recommend converting to polylines or curves when exporting.

General Discussion / Why you shouldn't leave a laser unattended
« on: December 12, 2016, 09:12:56 AM »
A user of T2Laser contacted me regarding this unfortunate incident.

He left the machine for around 15-20 minutes and came back to a blazing fire!

It was apparently cutting "foam", which doesn't sound very safe to begin with, but it is a good reminder to everyone.

Obviously we do not know the cause but he said the machine had stopped once before with the laser on and he suspects the same happened here. I asked about power savings and he said the settings were changed to not sleep but of course that doesn't mean the USB ports weren't powered down or something else happened to cause it.

Controller Boards / Differences
« on: November 20, 2016, 05:14:47 PM »
Most of the cheaper systems seem to be using ANet or Melzi controller boards (all-in-one) rather than the Mega2560 and RAMPS boards.

What are your thoughts on these?

If you have any links to i3 type machines that are a good buy I'd be very interested.

Also, is there anything else I should be looking for. Like self leveling or dual extruders etc.

General Discussion / different machine
« on: November 11, 2016, 04:34:59 AM »
Does anyone have experience with this machine:

It obviously uses different firmware, perhaps a clone of the LaserAxe?

If you have a hex that is suitable would you post it.

T2 Engraving / Shows "Connected" but not "Grbl Ready"
« on: October 20, 2016, 05:14:11 AM »
This means the COM port was opened but Grbl isn't responding.

I was able to flash the firmware, but still couldn't connect. I tried another cable, same thing.

I went to Device Manager and saw it had a generic COM port in the Ports section, but there was also a "USB 2.0 Serial" listed under Other devices.

I clicked on it and selected to update driver, chose search automatically and waited. After a few seconds it started to update the driver and on completion it showed USB-SERIAL CH340 was updated successfully and now it appears correctly in the Ports (COM & LPT) section and is gone from Other devices, but more importantly, it works!

I'm guessing that Windows initially installed a generic driver that wasn't fully compatible. I also had to re-scan the COM ports and select the new one that showed up as a different COM port number.

General Discussion / now that's a laser...

Interesting use, and it claims no harm to skin... I'm not going to test that claim.

General Discussion / Laserable Plastic
« on: August 28, 2016, 10:23:36 AM »
I've been using Rowmark laserable plastic but last week I decided to try the Bur-Lane brand as I got a good deal on it.

The results were very good, nice clean marking at least on the black over white that I used.

I used speed 800 on my 2500mW laser.

(attached are immediately after engraving, they could probably use a quick clean-up but look great already)

General Discussion / pancakes anyone?

not only does it dispense them, but it cooks them too.

T2 Engraving / T2Laser new features
« on: August 14, 2016, 08:06:34 AM »
The T2Laser license allows all registered users free upgrades for 1 year, so unlike most software that requires you to purchase an upgrade each time new features are added these additions are free for everyone  8)

I have already written the code and will be doing extensive testing over the next couple of days before releasing a beta for you all to test. Before I release it, I am looking for some feedback.

So we're all on the same page, raster means it is engraved/scanned and vector means it is either cut or engraved as a line.

I'm calling it Sketch Plus and it supports the following:

1. Overlay filled Sketch on an Image - the result is a combined raster job (so you can quickly add text to your images)
2. Add vector Sketch to an Image - results in a raster image combined with vector Sketch (used for cut out?).
3. Add vector Sketch to a filled Sketch - the result is a raster Sketch combined with vector Sketch, could be used to "crisp" up the edges of a Sketch as a quick way to produce filled text.
4. Image with contour cut - results in a raster image followed by traced vector

So now, with Sketch you have 6 modes including the previous Sketch vector and Sketch Filled raster output.

My question, am I missing anything? While I'm working on the Sketch code I'd like to make any other improvements.

In the trace module I now allow you to use zoom, I still think you get better results with 1:1 view but after some testing the difference is negligible so I have enabled it. It now uses the output for #4 above.

There are many small updates and bug fixes in addition to the above, I am now correctly supporting transparent png images  and have fixed some of the sub-form open locations. The simulation "View" can skip laser off lines (previously drawn as yellow).
