>How do you engrave with depth, but without the soot/ash?
I don't see how you can without getting soot and ash. To burn to a depth means you're really burning with the laser so there is going to be soot and ash. You'll need an air assist blowing right onto where your laser beam hits your material.

Air2 shows my 60Litres/Min air compressor. This is a bit too strong and I've had to choke off the air hose valve to reduce the air pressure blowing onto my wood. You do not need a lot of air flow, just enough to gently blow away the soot/ash. If you have too much air pressure, it will blow the soot/ash onto and into the surface of the wood and look like a black smear. You'll have to experiment to find the right pressure. I'm guessing a 40 Lites/Min unit would have been about right.
Air3 shows my air manifold and note the valve I've turned to just the right spot to control just the right amount of air pressure coming out.
