Rocks?
« on: September 29, 2018, 09:11:13 PM »
Has anyone tried engraving on rocks?  I picked up a small bag of rocks at
Hobby Lobby today while I was also picking up mirrors.  I've seen engraved
rocks before, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Any suggestions for speed an number of passes?  I assume I'll be using full
power and 0.1 resolution.

Right now I'm thinking of just trying to engrave text on the rocks.

i have seen it, but i do not know how well our low powered laser will do with that.

If you are just doing text, is suggest going at 50 speed and at least 8-12 passes and see if that makes a mark. you can adjust from there

I've done "rocks" on my CO2, usually polished black river stones. They work pretty well, the engraving is white and low resolution but OK for text. They are popular for pet headstones and memory gardens (yes, those are things).

I haven't tried using the diode laser but it's similar to glass in that you are fracturing the surface so it should work.
