I use extruded iron grid as a base to hold material while burning. It sits about 10mm above waste board and serves two purposes:
1. Protects the waste board from getting the sharp focus point of the beam.
2. Allows the air assist to blow thru when cutting.
When working with media such as veneer or cardstock I use magnets to keep the material stationary. When not in use, the magnets always want to fall thru the grid and attach to the underside. Attached 3d printed model holds 2 12mm magnets. First pass was a simple cylinder but then I needed to waste a few hours.
